It is a question of total weight versus the weight borne by each tire. You want to reduce the overall weight of the car as much as possible, but you also want the right amount of weight on each tire, and that right amount depends on the type of racing you are doing. For road racing and auto-cross you generally want a 50% left-to-right weight distribution while for circle track you want to shift more weight towards the inside of the turns.
